Economy: Nigerians no longer accommodate relatives as cost of living soars

The economic challenges facing many Nigerian families have led to a shift in the traditional practice of taking in young relatives and raising them alongside their own children. The limited purchasing power of Nigerians has significantly impacted living standards, prompting individuals to become more conscious of their spending habits and seek ways to reduce the cost of living, particularly in terms of feeding expenses.

In the past, it was common for Nigerians to assist various family members, especially those with low economic means. However, the current economic climate has made it increasingly difficult for the average family of five to support themselves, let alone take on additional responsibilities like caring for relatives. As a result, more families are finding it challenging to accommodate or adopt young relatives due to financial constraints.

Stories shared by individuals like Mrs. Amanda Odudu, Mr. Onokoya Samson, and Mrs. Sarah Okwudili highlight the struggles faced by families in this economic environment. Mrs. Odudu recounted how her niece returned her daughter after six years due to economic pressures faced by her husband. Similarly, Mr. Samson’s son was brought back to him by his brother, who cited financial difficulties as the reason for not being able to continue caring for the child.

Mrs. Okwudili, a widow and a baker, expressed her concerns about now having to provide for three children after her late husband’s sisters returned her kids, citing increased expenses and low income as reasons for the decision. These personal accounts reflect the harsh realities many Nigerians are currently grappling with, as they navigate the challenges of rising costs and limited resources.

The prevailing sentiment among these individuals is a mix of gratitude for the support received and a deep sense of uncertainty about the future. Despite the difficulties they face, there is a shared belief in divine intervention and hope for a better tomorrow. As the economic landscape continues to pose challenges for families across Nigeria, the resilience and faith exhibited by these individuals serve as a reminder of the strength and determination that characterize many in the face of adversity.
