Lagos Red Line for test-run soon — Commissioner

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, Gbenga Omotosho, announced on Thursday that the Red Line Rail project is set to undergo a two-month test run.

Speaking at a press conference held at Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, Omotosho reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing the lives of the state’s residents.

Since its inauguration by President Bola Tinubu on Feb. 29, residents have been eagerly anticipating the commencement of commercial operations on the red line.

The red line is expected to initially transport 500,000 passengers daily upon becoming operational. This 37 km rail line will connect key bus terminals at Oyingbo, Yaba, Oshodi, Ikeja, and Iju, extending to Agbado in Ogun State.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated that Lagos aims to reclaim over N4 trillion annually in lost work hours caused by traffic congestion, thereby boosting productivity.

The state is committed to transforming commuter experiences while addressing issues such as traffic congestion and road safety.

Omotosho provided an update on the red line rail project and indicated that the Sanwo-Olu administration will provide further details on its development projects during the annual ministerial briefings starting on April 23.

He highlighted the rapid progress in the construction of the Pediatric Hospital at Adeniji Adele and the ongoing development of the Badagry General Hospital in the health sector.

Additionally, he reiterated that the Red Line Rail project will undergo a two-month test run.

Furthermore, the annual ministerial briefing is scheduled to run from April 23 to May 28, during which all ministries will report on their performance over the past year since the commencement of the administration’s second term in office.

Regarding the proposed intervention for teachers and healthcare workers who are unable to work remotely, Omotosho assured that adequate compensation has been arranged for them as part of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s welfare program.

It is important to note that the government had previously allowed its employees to work from home for several days to alleviate financial burdens amidst the rising cost of living, although this arrangement did not extend to certain workers such as teachers who are required to be physically present in school on all working days.
