2024 UTME: Pure water hawker scores 309, bags scholarship

A pure water hawker named Ugwu Augustus has achieved a remarkable feat by scoring 309 in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, thus earning a full scholarship to the university. Alex Onyia, the founder of Educare, a UTME preparatory organization, shared that Augustus had dropped out of school two years prior to this achievement.

Onyia revealed that despite Augustus’s unconventional path, he was encouraged to join the UTME preparatory program with the condition of scoring above 300 to secure the scholarship. The young man from Ugwu Chibuzo’s village not only met but exceeded this challenge by scoring 309 in JAMB.

Augustus demonstrated unwavering dedication throughout the preparation process, attending classes during the day and then returning to his pure water selling business on the streets. His passion for learning extended beyond his own studies, as he would stay back after class to help fellow students understand the concepts taught.

The camaraderie among Augustus and his peers striving for academic success was evident as they supported each other in their quest to score above 300 and earn scholarships. Their efforts paid off during the monthly assessments, leading to Augustus’s enrollment in the full scholarship program offered by Educare.

In the midst of discouraging trends in this year’s UTME results, Augustus’s story shines as a beacon of perseverance and excellence, showcasing the power of determination and hard work in achieving one’s goals.
