Premier League clubs to vote on scrapping VAR

Premier League clubs will have the opportunity to decide on the fate of VAR in the upcoming season during their annual general meeting next month. Wolves have taken the initiative by proposing the elimination of VAR to the Premier League, prompting a vote among the 20 top-flight teams on June 6. The rationale behind Wolves’ resolution is the belief that VAR is detracting from the essence of the Premier League brand, given the contentious decisions that have plagued the current season.

For VAR to be removed from the Premier League, at least 14 out of the 20 clubs must vote against its continuation. Wolves are anticipated to engage with other clubs to garner support ahead of the crucial meeting. The introduction of VAR in 2019 aimed to assist referees in avoiding clear errors that had previously affected matches. However, this season has witnessed numerous controversies surrounding the technology, with managers and fans expressing growing discontent with the system.

Wolves emphasized that the decision to propose the resolution was made after careful deliberation and out of respect for the Premier League, PGMOL, and fellow competitors. They argue that the trade-off for a marginal increase in accuracy is outweighed by the negative impact on the fan-football relationship and the Premier League brand. Consequently, they advocate for the removal of VAR starting from the 2024/25 season.

Wolves’ manager Gary O’Neil disclosed receiving apologetic calls from PGMOL chief Howard Webb following VAR decisions against his team. Concerns such as the effect of VAR on goal celebrations, prolonged checks, and inadequate communication in stadiums have been highlighted as reasons for scrapping the system. While the Premier League views VAR as a valuable asset, Wolves and other critics believe that its drawbacks outweigh the benefits.

The Premier League plans to engage in discussions regarding VAR with clubs at the upcoming Annual General Meeting, acknowledging the concerns raised. Despite the opposition, the League stands firm in its support for VAR, aiming to collaborate with PGMOL to enhance the system for the betterment of the sport and its supporters.
