ASUU urges FG to tackle insecurity, hardship

The University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to address the growing security concerns and financial difficulties in the nation.

During a press briefing in Jos on Friday, Assoc. Prof. Jurbe Molwus, the union’s chairman, made this plea.

Molwus attributed the escalating poverty among Nigerians to certain government policies, particularly the elimination of fuel subsidies.

“The widely known removal of subsidies and the fluctuating exchange rate have led to hyperinflation, evident in increased commodity prices, among other effects. The standard of living for ordinary Nigerians has decreased, and the disparity between the affluent and the impoverished is widening daily,” he remarked.

The chairman implored the federal government to expedite the process of establishing a minimum wage as requested by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

He recommended that the government promptly reassess all economic policies that are progressively diminishing the quality of life in Nigeria.

Molwus also urged the federal government to honor all agreements made with ASUU over the years before the conclusion of the 14-day ultimatum issued by its National Executive Council.

He cautioned that a failure to implement the agreements within the specified period could lead to a full-fledged industrial action by the union.
