A’itana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas scored to secure Barcelona their third women’s Champions League title, clinching a 2-0 victory over Lyon, who have won the tournament a record eight times, on Saturday.
Barcelona had previously suffered defeats against Lyon in the 2019 and 2022 finals. Still, they managed to overcome the French powerhouse in Bilbao, completing a remarkable quadruple this season under coach Jonatan Giraldez, who was overseeing his final match in charge.
Bonmati found the net in the 63rd minute, while substitute Putellas sealed the win in stoppage time, avenging Barcelona’s past losses to Sonia Bompastor’s Lyon side.
With this victory, Barcelona claimed their third Champions League trophy in five final appearances over the last six seasons, firmly establishing themselves as a dominant force in women’s football.
Barcelona’s players expressed confidence and determination in their ability to defeat Lyon this time, focusing on their experience and mental resilience alongside their undeniable talent. Their conviction paid off in front of a record 51,000-strong crowd at the women’s Champions League final at San Mames.
Overcoming early nerves, Barcelona faced a strong Lyon side with Lucy Bronze hitting the woodwork and Wendie Renard coming close. However, Barcelona displayed composure at the back, unlike their previous final appearances where they conceded early goals.
Barcelona created opportunities of their own, with Patri Guijarro and Caroline Graham Hansen shining in attack. Bonmati’s crucial goal in the 63rd minute, assisted by Mariona Caldentey, proved decisive, leading to a deflected strike that beat Endler in the Lyon goal.
Despite Lyon’s efforts to mount a comeback, Barcelona’s defense held firm, and Putellas sealed the victory with a late goal, securing Barcelona’s celebrations and their third Champions League title.
