We’re not inflating prices of garri, rice, beans; we sell what we buy – traders tell FCCPC

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) conducted a fact-finding mission in markets in Osun to investigate the reasons behind the increase in food prices. Officials from FCCPC visited Olufi Market in Ayedaade Local Government and Ifon Market in Orolu Local Government, engaging with market leaders and traders to understand the factors contributing to the rising prices. The commission’s South-West Zonal Coordinator, Mrs. Janet Odo, stated that the visit aimed to address issues such as conspiracy, price gouging, hoarding, and market distortion identified during surveillance activities. The goal was to gather information, sensitize traders on fair pricing, and ultimately ensure consumer protection and fair competition in the market. Traders, including Mrs. Bukola Ogunyinka and Mr. Muniru Adeyeye, denied inflating prices, attributing the hike to factors like the removal of fuel subsidy and increased transportation costs. Consumers like Mrs. Mary Adetoye expressed concerns about the affordability of food items for the less privileged, urging government intervention. Rice seller Mrs. Munirudeen Adeniyi highlighted the impact of border closures on food prices and called for their reopening to lower prices in the market.
