President Joe Biden, during his visit to France hosted by Emmanuel Macron, voiced unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion and the impending US election. Biden, in the aftermath of his visit to Normandy commemorating D-Day, stressed the importance of America’s European alliances, contrasting with the isolationist stance of his electoral opponent, Donald Trump. Amid Ukraine’s struggle against Russian aggression and a plea for increased Western military assistance, Biden assured that the United States, under his leadership, would steadfastly stand by Ukraine’s side.
In discussions with Macron at the Elysee Palace, Biden emphasized the broader implications of Putin’s actions, stating that Europe as a whole was at risk if Ukraine fell. He reaffirmed America’s solidarity with Ukraine, declaring a firm commitment to not abandon them in their time of need. Additionally, Biden addressed the upcoming presidential elections where he is expected to face Trump, a competition seen as a significant test for American democracy.
Macron commended the unity between the US and France under Biden’s presidency, appreciating his collaborative approach towards Europe. The leaders shared mutual concerns, particularly regarding Iran’s aggressive tactics. Both countries pledged to exert pressure to counteract Iran’s escalating strategies.
Throughout Biden’s stay in France, which included engagements marking the D-Day anniversary, Ukrainian President Zelensky also participated in discussions with Biden, underscoring the importance of steadfast support for Ukraine. Biden acknowledged delays in delivering aid to Ukraine due to legislative processes but expressed satisfaction that the aid was eventually secured.
The partnerships between the US, France, and Ukraine have strengthened since Russia’s invasion in 2022. As the presidential elections loom, Biden and Macron continue to bolster their public images through high-profile engagements, with Macron also focusing on coalition-building efforts to support Ukrainian resistance against Russia. Macron denounced pacifist sentiments and vowed to sustain Ukrainian defiance despite challenges.
