Biden seeks reset after debate flop rocks campaign

A gravely injured Joe Biden sought to revitalize his reelection campaign on Friday following a debate showing that unsettled his supporters and brought delight to Donald Trump’s allies.

The Democrats had anticipated a confident president addressing critics who question his suitability for a second term, while simultaneously criticizing Trump for his criminal history and the perceived threat he poses to democracy.

However, what they witnessed was a faltering performance from Biden, characterized by hoarseness, stumbling over words, holding back, frequent bewilderment, and a general air of confusion.

Democratic former White House communications chief Kate Bedingfield admitted, “There’s no denying it— that debate was not favorable for Joe Biden,” in an interview with CNN after the debate concluded.

David Axelrod, a seasoned advisor in Barack Obama’s administration, remarked that Biden’s display only confirmed the concerns people have about an 81-year-old seeking the presidency.

After engaging in practice debates at Camp David, Biden was set to commence his campaign’s major event in North Carolina, aiming to recover from his lackluster debate performance.

Faced with inquiries about his performance and future plans, Biden, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, visited an Atlanta Waffle House and explained his hoarseness as a consequence of a “sore throat,” adding that debating with a “liar” was challenging.

Despite Biden managing to address Trump on issues like abortion rights and his involvement in the 2021 unrest, he took an unusually long time— nearly 45 minutes— to delve into Trump’s criminal past and legal troubles.

Biden’s delivery was subdued, with moments of distraction and lengthy pauses following initial stumbling.

While Trump’s rhetoric was riddled with falsehoods and evasions, he skillfully sidestepped the pitfalls that tripped up Biden during the debate.

As concerns grew within the Democratic camp over Biden’s performance, there was even speculation about potentially finding a new candidate before the party’s convention in August.

Though there were murmurings in political circles about Gavin Newsom as a possible replacement, the California governor swiftly dismissed such notions.

In contrast, Trump’s supporters reveled in the outcome of the debate, with some likening it to a one-sided prizefight that should have been called off early on.
