The Chairperson of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed concerns about the impact of the youth migration syndrome, commonly known as ‘JAPA’, on the country’s human capital resources during a press conference held on Thursday to announce the upcoming 2024 National Diaspora Day Celebration scheduled for July 25 in Abuja.
Emphasizing the theme of this year’s celebration, which focuses on the “Japa Phenomenon and its Implications for National Development,” Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the significance of understanding the implications of the increasing trend of young Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad, using ‘Japa’ as a key term that encapsulates this migration narrative.
In addition to unveiling the commemorative events for the National Diaspora Day Celebration, Dabiri-Erewa also shed light on the 2024 Diaspora Merit Award planned for the occasion. The commemorative day serves as a tribute to the Nigerian diaspora community, underscoring both the advantages and challenges associated with the ‘Japa’ trend.
Describing ‘Japa’ as a Yoruba term signifying escape or fleeing, Dabiri-Erewa highlighted how economic uncertainty, security issues, and inadequate living standards have been pivotal factors prompting Nigerians, especially the youth, to seek better prospects abroad. The consequential brain drain resulting from this migration pattern poses a significant setback to the country’s workforce and productivity levels, warranting a strategic shift to leverage this challenge into an opportunity for national growth.
The annual celebration provides a platform to honor exemplary Nigerians making positive contributions in the diaspora and showcasing their noteworthy achievements in various fields. Dabiri-Erewa stressed the importance of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of diaspora Nigerians who are actively contributing to the development and reputation of their homeland, urging a collective effort across public and private sectors, government bodies, and the media to harness the skills and resources of the diaspora for the nation’s advancement.
As NiDCOM prepares for the second edition of the national diaspora merit awards, the ceremony aims to spotlight outstanding individuals in categories such as agriculture, business, health, leadership, philanthropy, sports, education, entertainment, technology, and industry. Scheduled activities for the occasion include engaging panel discussions, messages of goodwill, presentations on specific diaspora initiatives, and discussions on investment projects spearheaded by diaspora members in Nigeria, among other engaging sessions aimed at fostering collaboration and progress within the diaspora community.
