Nigeria’s Ben Tukur elected Chairperson of ICAO AFI Plan

Nigeria’s Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council, Engr Ben Tukur, recently achieved a significant milestone by being elected as the 5th Chairperson of the ICAO Comprehensive Regional Implementation Plan for Aviation Safety in Africa, known as the AFI Plan. This notable appointment was announced by Tunde Moshood, the Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo.

During the 27th meeting of the AFI Plan Steering Committee, held as part of the 9th AFI Aviation Week in Libreville, Gabon, Engr Ben Tukur’s leadership role was confirmed, highlighting Nigeria’s active participation in enhancing aviation safety measures across the African region.

The AFI Plan, initiated by ICAO in 2007, serves as a crucial framework designed to bolster aviation safety in Africa through a sustainable and coordinated approach. Central to the plan’s objectives is the promotion of collaboration among various stakeholders in the aviation sector, encompassing States, Regional Safety Oversight Organisations (RSOOs), and Regional Accident Investigation Agencies (RAIOs).

With a focus on reinforcing safety oversight and management capacity, the AFI Plan aims to support States in elevating their safety oversight and management capabilities, thereby enhancing safety standards and practices across the region. Additionally, efforts are directed towards increasing the certification of aerodromes for international operations, implementing State Safety Programs, and aiding in long-term infrastructure planning to facilitate safe and efficient aviation operations.

Engr Ben Tukur’s designation as the Chairperson underlines Nigeria’s commitment to advancing aviation safety standards in Africa. His leadership is expected to drive forward the objectives of the AFI Plan, fostering a secure and productive aviation environment continent-wide while promoting active engagement and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure sustained progress in aviation safety measures.
