A passenger plane tragically crashed shortly after takeoff in Kathmandu on Wednesday morning. According to police in the capital of Nepal, the pilot was successfully rescued from the burning wreckage of the aircraft; however, all 18 other individuals on board were confirmed dead. This unfortunate incident has drawn attention to Nepal’s troubling history when it comes to aviation safety. The Himalayan nation has experienced a series of fatal accidents involving small planes and helicopters over the years, raising ongoing concerns about air travel safety within the region.
The ill-fated flight was operated by Saurya Airlines and was carrying a total of two crew members along with 17 employees from the airline itself, as reported by Dan Bahadur Karki, a spokesman for the Nepali police. He also mentioned that the pilot, who survived the crash, is currently receiving medical treatment following the incident. Sadly, the bodies of 18 victims have been recovered from the wreckage, which includes one individual identified as a foreign national. The authorities are presently in the process of preparing those bodies for post-mortem examinations.
According to Gyanendra Bhul of Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority, this specific flight was intended for either technical or maintenance purposes, although he did not provide further details regarding these operations. Both Karki and Bhul were unable to ascertain the nationality of the single foreigner who was aboard the flight at the time of the crash, leaving questions unanswered about the diverse backgrounds of those involved in this tragedy.
Images that emerged in the aftermath of the crash, shared by Nepal’s military, vividly depict the scene, with the fuselage of the plane appearing to be split apart and reduced to charred remains. In one image, around a dozen soldiers dressed in camouflage gear can be seen standing atop the wreckage, while the earth surrounding the area is covered in fire retardant, a precautionary measure taken to mitigate the spread of flames.
The crash incident occurred at approximately 11:15 am local time (which corresponds to 0530 GMT), as stated in a report released by the military, which also highlighted that a quick response team from the army was engaged in assisting with the rescue operations that followed the accident. The news portal Khabarhub reported that initial assessments indicated the airplane had caught fire after it skidded off the runway during takeoff, complicating what should have been a routine flight.
The plane was expected to operate on one of Nepal’s busiest air routes, specifically between Kathmandu and Pokhara, which is recognized as a significant tourism hub within the mountainous nation. The route is well-traveled by both locals and visitors alike, particularly those looking to explore the natural beauty of the Himalayan region. Saurya Airlines is known for exclusively flying Bombardier CRJ 200 jets, as indicated on the airline’s official website.

The European Union has responded to these safety concerns by issuing a ban on all Nepali carriers from entering its airspace. The last major commercial flight accident in Nepal occurred in January 2023, when a Yeti Airlines service tragically crashed while attempting to land at Pokhara, leading to the loss of all 72 individuals on board. This particular incident marked the deadliest aviation disaster in Nepal since 1992, which saw the catastrophic crash of a Pakistan International Airlines aircraft that killed all 167 people aboard as it approached Kathmandu airport.
Earlier in that same year, another significant tragedy occurred when a Thai Airways aircraft crashed near the same airport, claiming the lives of 113 individuals.
