Protests: Obi wants genocidal threats in Lagos investigated and tackled

The Labour Party Presidential Candidate for the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has recently voiced his significant concerns regarding the alarming trend of some individuals attempting to sow seeds of disunity and discord within the country. This issue has become particularly pressing in light of recent incidents where certain people have issued threats of genocide against the Igbo community residing in Lagos.

In light of these distressing developments, Obi emphasized that such divisive actions and rhetoric merit thorough investigations and must be swiftly addressed by leaders and authorities at all levels. He stressed the importance of taking decisive steps to nip these dangerous tendencies in the bud before they can cause further harm to the fabric of the society.

Obi pointed out that the current challenging times facing our political landscape require every citizen to contribute positively and collectively in order to reset the nation towards a path of development and progress. He underscored that statements and actions that alienate specific groups, particularly those stemming from some misguided individuals, should be firmly discouraged and halted immediately to foster a more inclusive environment.

He further articulated that no individual holds superiority over another when it comes to being a Nigerian and that this fundamental understanding should guide our interactions and relationships with one another, promoting a sense of equality among all citizens.

In a follow-up post on his X handle on Friday, Obi expressed his profound disturbance upon reading some of the genocidal threats directed at the Igbo people, which included calls for their forced relocation. He issued a respectful yet firm warning that such harmful rhetoric poses a serious threat to our national unity and is in direct opposition to our Constitution, which upholds the rights of all Nigerians to live and work freely in any part of the nation without fear of displacement.

Obi called upon those in positions of authority to demonstrate true leadership by urgently speaking out against this incendiary and damaging rhetoric. He urged for immediate measures to be implemented, including the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of those responsible for promoting this reprehensible agenda. Such actions would serve as a crucial deterrent to others who might contemplate similar threats to our national security and the unity that binds us as a country.

He concluded his message by urging all Nigerians to unite in opposition to divisive sentiments and to actively promote principles of unity, tolerance, and mutual understanding. Obi emphasized that our collective future hinges on our willingness to coexist peacefully and to collaborate harmoniously across our diverse backgrounds.

Moreover, he asserted that it is imperative for the government and relevant security agencies to act with urgency and resolve to uphold this fundamental principle of coexistence, ensuring that every Nigerian can live without the fear of discrimination or persecution due to their ethnic identity or any other defining characteristic.
