Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a directive for the closure of Dosunmu Market in Lagos Island subsequent to a fire outbreak on Tuesday. It is important to note that the fire resulted in the destruction of no less than 14 buildings and the collapse of four structures. The incident was reportedly sparked by the improper refuelling of a generator in the penthouse of one of the buildings.
In a post on his Facebook page on Thursday, Governor Sanwo-Olu shared images from his visit to the site and expressed, “Dear Lagosians, in the wake of the devastating fire at Dosunmu Market, I personally inspected the area to assess the extent of the damage and engage with those affected.
“The fire, stemming from the mishandling of flammable materials, caused significant losses. We have launched a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the root cause and enforce more stringent safety measures.
“Mandatory integrity assessments for standing structures have been instituted, and Dosunmu Market will remain shut until we can guarantee the safety and compliance of all buildings. Unauthorized structures will be demolished.
“The Ministry of Physical Planning will escalate its endeavors to uphold building regulations and prevent the inappropriate use of residential properties. The safety of our citizens cannot be disregarded.
“I want to reassure all those impacted that we are actively exploring all possible avenues to support you and avert future incidents.”
