Mainoo handed England Euros start as Southgate resists major changes

Kobbie Mainoo was given his first competitive start for England by Gareth Southgate as the Three Lions aim to begin their Euro 2024 campaign in Sunday’s last 16 clash against Slovakia.

The Manchester United midfielder has earned this opportunity after an impactful performance as a substitute in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Slovenia.

Southgate, however, has opted against making significant changes to a team that has struggled to find form in the tournament thus far.

Mainoo comes into the lineup in place of Conor Gallagher, the only change from the Slovenia match, while Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer remain on the bench.

Slovakia has maintained the same lineup that advanced to the last 16 with a 1-1 draw against Romania.
