Protests: FG declares Prisons ‘Red Zones’, warns against attempted violations

ABUJA: In preparation for the anticipated nationwide protests against poor governance set to begin on August 1, the Federal Government has officially classified all 256 custodial centres across the nation as “red zones.” This designation underscores that their integrity must be preserved against any form of violation, regardless of the circumstances.

The Controller General of Corrections (CGC), Hailey Nababa, issued this warning in a comprehensive statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.

Details of the impending national protest, which is scheduled to take place on the first day of August 2024, have prompted the Nigerian Correctional Service to make it clear to the general public that these Custodial Centres are now designated as red zones. The CGC has advised that any individuals or groups lacking legitimate reasons for being present at these facilities should keep their distance to avoid any potential issues, as articulated in the statement delivered on behalf of the Controller General by the Service Spokesman, ACC Abubakar Danlami Umar.

The statement further elaborated, “In addition, the Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to remind the public that both Custodial and Non-custodial Centres serve as vital national assets that play a critical role in maintaining public safety, as well as ensuring national security.”

The consequences of tampering with or launching any attacks on these facilities could lead to significant disruption of law and order, which would only serve to worsen the overall security situation within society.

In light of this, the Service urges all individuals within the community to join forces with the Correctional Service to protect these important facilities. Necessary security measures have already been implemented to guarantee that none of the correctional facilities suffer any form of desecration or harm throughout this sensitive period.

Additionally, the Ministry of Interior Joint Taskforce (MOIJTF) has been mobilized to provide heightened security both within and around custodial facilities across the country.

Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa FICMC, MFR, mni, has expressed gratitude for the ongoing cooperation and support from members of the public in maintaining peace and stability in and around the correctional centres throughout the nation.
