The Northern Senators Forum has made an earnest appeal to the youth and all Nigerians to exercise caution and restraint in the ongoing protests taking place across the country. This appeal comes in light of the violence that has erupted during these demonstrations, leading to significant loss of lives and destruction of property. The Forum emphasizes that it is crucial for all participants to consider the implications of their actions and the potential consequences that may arise from escalating tensions.
Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’adua, who serves as the Chairman of the Forum, articulated this message in a letter directed to Nigerian youths, which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday. In his communication, he expressed a profound sense of concern for the current state of affairs in the nation, coupled with a sense of hope for a brighter future for Nigeria.
In his letter, Yar’adua acknowledged the democratic right of citizens to participate in peaceful protests to advocate for their demands and grievances. However, he also pointed out the importance of recognizing that many protests have regrettably devolved into violence, which undermines the very objectives that participants aim to achieve. He highlighted that the ongoing protests have led to tragic outcomes, including the loss of lives and properties in several states, which has prompted local authorities to impose curfews in an effort to restore order.
This troubling situation persists despite numerous calls from well-meaning Nigerians, including respected Islamic and Christian clerics, who have urged the public to consider alternative methods for negotiation and dialogue with the government. Yar’adua stressed the importance of reflection among those who have organized the nationwide protests, particularly in light of the events that transpired on the very first day of the demonstrations.
Furthermore, he conveyed that President Bola Tinubu is acutely aware of the challenges and hardships faced by Nigerians and is actively working to address these pressing issues. Yar’adua pointed out that the President has shown his commitment to the welfare of the citizenry by increasing the minimum wage, a decision reached after engaging in constructive dialogue with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). This achievement stands as a testament to the President’s willingness to listen to the concerns of the people and to collaborate with various stakeholders in the pursuit of solutions.
In addition to wage increases, the government has initiated several social welfare intervention schemes designed to alleviate the economic difficulties experienced by many Nigerians. These include cash transfer programs, consumer credit schemes, and the establishment of the N110 billion National Youth Investment Fund, among others. These initiatives aim to provide much-needed support to those struggling financially and to foster a more equitable society.
Moreover, this administration has taken significant steps to ensure that students from disadvantaged backgrounds can access loans, thereby enabling them to complete their university education. This groundbreaking initiative is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria and represents a major leap forward in making higher education more accessible to all.
Yar’adua also highlighted the recent signing of the North West and South East Development Commissions, which are intended to bring development initiatives closer to the grassroots level. This move is aimed at addressing regional disparities and fostering inclusive growth across various communities.
In light of these developments, Yar’adua urged the youth to grant the government the opportunity to implement its policies and programs effectively. He emphasized the need for patience and understanding as the government works to actualize its vision for the nation. He encouraged young people to engage with the government through constructive dialogue and discussions, sharing their ideas and concerns in a collaborative manner.
Together, he believes that they can pave the way for a brighter future for themselves and for generations to come. He reminded the youth that they are the future leaders of Nigeria and that it is their responsibility to actively shape the destiny of their nation. He concluded his message with a call for wisdom, patience, and understanding, wishing that divine guidance may accompany their steps and actions as they navigate these challenging times.
